Jesus gave a clear command for his followers to participate in calling others to follow Him. He puts it this way in Matthew 28:19-20:

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

We use a SQUARE to describe this discipleship process, because there are FOUR PHASES to making disciples of Jesus.

  1. I do, you watch - The people the Lord has put in our lives are watching us follow Jesus.
  2. I do, you help - As we notice people watching how we follow Jesus, we ought to invite them to help us.
  3. You do, I help - Eventually, we can step back as they follow Jesus and simply help them on the way.
  4. You do, I watch - Finally, those who once were watching you follow Jesus are equipped to follow Jesus on their own.

A follower of Jesus is called to repent and believe the Gospel and be restored to our Father in Heaven.
A follower of Jesus is created to worship the Lord, equip the Church and seek the lost in every season of life.

Making disciples is the constant activity of our lives as followers of Jesus.
As people respond to Jesus as Lord and Savior, we baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
We continue to disciple followers of Jesus by teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded.

In Acts 1:8 before Jesus ascended to heaven, he gave us the scope of where He has sent us to make disciples saying,

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

We are called to go to whatever city we find ourselves in (Jerusalem), we are to go to the region we live in (Judea & Samaria), and we are to go to the end of the earth!
